I remember when they made direct X 10 Vista + exclusive and some games I wanted to play would no longer be available to me with my old OS. It was less than a year ago that I finally moved to windows 7 and I would like to stick with it for the next few years at least. I really don't like windows 8 and yes I have tried it, a lot.

Microsoft have often made dumb/bold moves in the past but surely they know that their current newest OS doesn't have enough of the market share to make software like Direct X exclusive to it. I realize to do so would be an attempt to make more people move over to OS 8 but what I think will actually happen is many gamers will just drop the PC all together. As a result, a lot of developers would stop making games for the PC.

But what do I know. What do you think would happen if Microsoft made Direct X 12 exclusive to windows 8+

A lot of pissed off people, but in no way would it make many gamers just drop the PC all together. All in all buying a 100$ OS to get extra performance out of your current hardware, compared to upgrade individual parts that would exceed 100$, isn't that steep. However I highly doubt microsoft would make it solely for win8 or win9 as this is supposed to be direct competition for the mantle API.

It's just just $100. Some people also really don't like windows 8. I personally find windows 8 doesn't work as well with older games as windows 7 does. There are many reasons not to upgrade actually.

Then don't upgrade if you don't like it. Many people don't like McDonalds yet they are thriving. Anyways speculation is just that.

I imagine that mantel wont require the upgrade and enough games support that so I'll just stop supporting Direct X all together if they move to windows 8+ exclusively.

That requires AMD GPUs, specifically GCN GPUs, where Direct X just requires newer generation of GPUs that already support Direct X 11. Highly doubt that if Direct X 12 provides the same benefits that mantle does that game makers will only target a select niche of users, just seems like bad business to me, just like Microsoft only pushing it to win 8.
