Is the Sapphire Tri-X 290 worth the extra money vs other coolers or a reference 290X?

I don't mind spending extra money but, benchmarks say the 290 and 290X overclock to the same performance. The Tri X is supposed to be the best overclocking cooler? Should I get some of these cheaper options? I'm not gonna get a 780Ti as I'm 1440p gaming and using Sony vegas.

I would not spend the extra money for a couple of more stream processors and compute units :)

Hope it helps on your decision, oh and by the way I own a R9 290 Tri-X non-OC but custom OC by myself :: from 957Mhz Clock to 1015Mhx stable :: and Memory :: from 1250Mhz to 1310Mhz stable ::

I paid €319 ;)

By going non-reference you also get a little extra in terms of build quality, not only a better fan.

That Sapphire is a beauty. Save the 70 quid.

Go with the Sapphire R9 290 TRI-X OC http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HFA44YQ. You can easily overclock to match the R9 290X and the nice aftermarket cooler is well worth it.

The reference coolers for the Hawaii cards are severely insufficient.

The 290 and 290x won't overclock to the same performance, the 290x will always be slightly ahead, but whether that's worth $X is debatable.

I find the Tri-x cooler fantastic, I almost never hear the fans (in a silent room) above the case fans (on lowest speed) when gaming. They only start to ramp up when benchmarking

The Tri-x is actually a reference board with a custom cooler. The Asus has an issue with not all heat pipes touching the GPU and the Gigabyte is also not as cool running as the Tri-x.
