Psu 4 pin 12V but 8 pin Mobo socket

Hi, My motherboard has 8 pin socket. My PSU(old one from my old system) hsa 4 pin connector. Can I just use the 4 pin in the 8 pin socket?
Another, Is it safe to use adaptors?

yes you can use it, all boards i used and saw has the extra 4 pins covered out of the box.

not sure if it is related to oc (when you oc really high), but based on experience, it is fine with just 4
