Pioneer 'BDR-2209' product package has on the front side of it's box - 'BDR-2209'. On the same box, on the side where the UPC Code is located, it has the model number as'BDR-209UBK/XV52. The Blu-Ray drive itself, from within the package box, has a label saying the model number is 'BDR-209UBK'. Is this a genuine BDR-2209 ?? Can this be? I've seen mention of BDR-209BDK, BDR-209EBK, BDR-209UBK and BDR-2209. Confused.

They are both genuine Pioneer models, but the 2209 comes with software and can handle a few more disc types.

Full spec of 209: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Computer/Computer+Drives/BDR-209DBK

Full spec of 2209: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Computer/Computer+Drives/BDR-2209

Go by the model number printed on the actual drive unit. If you expected and thought you were buying a 2209, contact the vendor, don't accept "they are the same" because they are not. Only around £15 difference in price here in the UK, but if you paid the extra for the 2209 model, that's what the vendor should have supplied to you.

However, you may decide that the 209 has all the features you need, in which case you may be entitled to a refund...

Thanks for replying Phillip. I shipped the received, questionable, unit back to the seller for a refund. Looked into another, quite reputable web site seller for a real genuine BDR-2209. On their site, newegg.com (USA) , they show several views of the BDR-2209 (?) plus packaging and contents. Zooming in on one of the views, it clearly has a label on the product as BDR-209UBK. Now I don't know what to do. I was set on getting that BDR-2209. Maybe the genuine BDR-2209 is available there, but not in the US.

Hi Guys,
This is another Philip and gang posting here and we also received a pioneer BDR-209UBK/XV52 aka BDR-2209 from B&H today.
They laughed when we told them about our problem and so it to shall be returned. But what's interesting is that there ARE 2 types of this drive, one that claims on the side of the box BDR-209UBK/XV52 and the other is a BDR-2209, we found this out today.
IOHO, we think one is a grey market area one and the other is the genuine one as B&H were going to give us some cash back on the one we received, but we'd prefer the genuine one thanks B&H.
If you type on the Pioneer website a BDR-209UBK/XV52, what the box claims, nothing exists, and if you type BDR-209M what the PC claims, again nothing exists.
So, what funny games the assemblers of Pioneer products are playing at will certainly make a dent in Pioneer's profits at the end of the year, because consumers will NOT put up with clearly buying their products with 3 different product numbers and NO manufacturer support. With the help of the internet we can all help get the message out to BDR-2209 prospective buyers and help make them more informed
BTW Newegg sell grey the product as with most of the other online venders so for now it is buyer beware!!!

Hi folks

I know this is an old thread...but it is what came up when I searched and I sort of went by this for a bit...but then got confused more and ended up calling Pioneer directly.

So, the deal is this:

"BDR-2209" refers to the RETAIL PACKAGE containing the BDR-209UBK drive, cables and software.

According to Pioneer, the BDR-209UBK is NOT available for sale by itself.

To further complicate this, elsewhere I learned that the firmware update is listed as 209M.

Go figure. LOL

I just ordered one of these BDR-2209 kits from Newegg......it is replacing a Pioneer BDR-208DBK that is only 2 years and 4 months old...maybe 200 burns.....

Unfortunately not many choices out there...LG and Pioneer being the big ones....and I have always liked Pioneer...but very disappointed that my current drive has started to spit out random coasters after a stellarly good record up til recently. Some burns would fail and the next one would be fine.....so I thought it might be the media...but its media that had worked flawlessly prior to this......moved the drive to another PC and same issue. THEN I find out that a BD I burned was bad...skipped and froze......yet another copy, made on the same drive, same batch of media and from the same ISO file is perfectly OK.

So what other choice is there other than watching every single disk I burn from end to end to check to make sure its OK?????????????????
