I have a desktop that I inherited from my brother in law and I'm wondering how much of an upgrade it can handle.

Mobo: ASrock N61-ps
Processor: AMD Athlon x2 (not sure on the specifics)
Current GPU: Geforce Gt 6500

I know it's pretty old, which is why I was considering and upgrade over spending $ on a new PC. At this point even a gt 6450 would be an upgrade. What do you think?

Honestly it depends what you want to do. If you just talking surfing web, see youtube videos, etc. (the other 90% of using a computer) yeah your going to be fine don't need to spend any money. IF your talking gaming especially 2013 titles (AC3, COD Ghosts, BF4, etc.) and plan to play 2014 then 2015 titles DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY UPGRADING. The costs of PC systems are 'low' when bought in a bundle, so the costs of upgrading all the parts you need would be MORE then that.

A common 'Gamer's Rig' would be a i5 system, 8GB of RAM (unless you multitask ALOT then go 16GB), 1TB Drive, many add a SSD to speed up Windows and the response of the system but doesn't help 'gaming' FPS so isn't needed, DVD, Windows all for as low as $349, swap the PSU (600W typical PCPartsPick $90) and a GPU of choice ($149-$499), basically around $700 or more when all said and done.

Many people see that as too expensive, so the answer to them (and potentially you) is get a PS3/Xbox 360 for around $150 and call it even. Never need to worry about upgrading or if a new game will 'play' on your system, as they ALWAYS work and have ALWAYS work for the past 10 years (which is two full PCs systems replaced because after 5 years your unable to play / use the current stuff out there).
