Pick a size and speed (USB2, 3, eSATA, etc) that you like at a price that you like and go for it.
The majority of drives are great, and your chances of getting a lemon are almost equal across all brands. Pick one with a manufacturers warranty and pull the trigger.

Any drive works with Windows X - doesn't matter the version. The normal ones are USB 3.0 (blue colored USB plugs), which requires your computer to have USB 3.0 to get the full use (high speed) from it (again look for Blue colored USB ports on your PC).
