Xeons are made for servers and/or workstations. There are 3 types of Xeons: the E3, the E5, and the E7.

E3 Xeons is what most people on this board talk about. They are basically a cheaper version of a Core i7 with a slightly different feature set that is more tuned to servers. However, they can still be used in a everyday gaming build, but just cant be overclocked.

E5 Xeons are the real-deal server processors with all of the Intel server bells and whistles enabled with more cores to boot.

E7 Xeons.... beats me! I don't really know in what ways they are different than E5 Xeons.

If you are going to get a Core i3, search around for a Core i3-4130. They are faster and should be at the same price.
Xeons are CPUs intended for servers and the like, but you can use them for a normal PC too. Most of the Xeon E3 CPUs are pretty similar to Core i7s, they just can't be overclocked. A Xeon E3 1240v3, for example, is almost just a Core i7-4770 without integrated graphics.

Think of a Xeon as a locked i7 cpu with no built in graphics, a Xeon paired with a 750ti would be a very decent little combo.

A xeon would of been my CPU of choice if I had of known about them back when I was building my pc...having 8 threads means you can multitask like crazy

they are a bit out of my price range. currently im planning to buy an i3 processor: i3 3240 3.4ghz and people have said its fine. would it be worth me spending an extra £60 on a xeon processor?

the i3 4130 is fine on a budget, it's a dual core but with hyperthreading. The Haswell cores are very stout. The AMD FX6300 6 core is also the same price, just depends which you want to go with, just another option to throw out there on a budget.

But the i3 will consume much less power
