Cant covert to a GPT

Hello there, I'm having major issues i'd like to install windows 8, but when ever i try i keep getting an error which says something like "unable to install on to a mbr must be a gpt". I know many people have had this trouble but i only have one, 1tb HDD. So what i'm asking is it possible to convert without having to purchase another hard drive? I'm unable to convert it to a gpt under disk management but it was grayed out. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How are you doing the installation? Is this being done booting from an installation dvd or as a web upgrade? If it's the latter the reason the option is greyed out is because the disk is already formatted and in use. A disk cannot be converted unless it is blank.
