I mostly listen to music and play games on the computer. Here's my rig:

Summary
Operating System
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
CPU
Intel Core i5 3350P @ 3.10GHz 31 °C
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
MSI B75MA-E33 (MS-7808) (SOCKET 0) 28 °C
Graphics
VE247 (1920x1080@60Hz)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 (Gigabyte) 27 °C
Storage
465GB Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKX-08U6AA0 ATA Device (SATA) 27 °C
465GB Seagate ST3500320AS ATA Device (SATA) 28 °C
Optical Drives
DTSOFT Virtual CdRom Device
ASUS DRW-24F1ST a ATA Device
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

I use a veteran pair of Sennheiser 555s. At all times I keep my system volume to 15% because higher makes my headphones too loud. Then I lower the volume again on specific programs like foobar2000, MPC, watching youtube etc, with the volume sliders.

Should I buy a sound card if I want better quality audio or will it make the sound in my headphones way too loud?

a sound card will not change volume levels. Try using them with an mp3 player to see if they are any better than with your computer. if they are not, then it would not be worth it for you to get a sound card.
