Without boring you with too much backstory, the short version is I'm upgrading my motherboard soon and the new one doesn't have a coaxial S/PDIF out, which my current desk sound system uses. I mentioned it to a friend, and they said they have some stuff I could have. I've never touched soundcards before or anything of the matter, so I have literally no idea what I'm doing, especially since I don't have manuals.

I received an Audigy2 ZS sound card and a Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty 5.25" panel. I have no idea what I'm doing. I put the soundcard in my PCI slot and booted up, and I didn't get any new recognized hardware off the bat, so I don't know if I have to do BIOS stuff or what. I have an Asrock P43DE3 if that helps, I haven't figured out which new board I'm getting though. What do I have to do to get the panel working with it? Will they even work together? A bit of research says the Audigy2 ZS is pretty old, what can I do with it? Custom drivers you would recommend for gaming? Is it even worth using over current on-board chipsets?

Overall I'm pretty damn clueless right now. I'd spend more time looking around, but my life's a bit hectic right now and I really don't get more than an hour to myself a day.

To my knowledge the XFI panel won't work with the 2ZS card. I think there are some ways to mod it but from what I remember reading about it they are different. I have a 2zs with its front panel but I didn't have the cable to run between them. That's why I was looking.

With Vista and above the 2ZS is rather useless. MS changed where the drivers run in the OS, and the 2ZS lost it's ability to provide all the EAX functions it had. There was a set of "alchemy" (?) drivers that was supposed to restore much of it, but AFAIK they weren't very good. The only benefit over modern SC the 2ZS probably has is higher SNR. Not sure that's worth it. I pulled my 2ZS and front panel when I upgraded to win7.

Windows 7 x64. I just went into device manager and scanned for changes (I forgot to, oops). and now I get a generic 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller with a code 12, so I guess I'll have to mess with the IRQ. So that's out of the way.

What do I have to do to get the panel working with it? I don't recognize the plug on it besides the 4-pin floppy power.

1394 is the firewire plug on the 2ZS itself. I never even tried to use the 2ZS with win7 so I don't know if it includes drivers for the 2ZS or not.

Turns out the wire I needed was a normal 40 wire/pin IDE cable. I had one in my junk bin. 40 pin/80wire cables won't work. One of the needed wires is reversed or not hooked up. Do a search for XFI front panel and 2ZS to see how compatible they are. I'm going from memory of around 2yrs ago.
