No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

My 20-month old Lenovo Y570 just cut out (no blue screen or black screen, just died without any warning), and upon attempts to restart it, gave me this message.

With the hard drive attached, it'll wait at the BIOS loading screen for about 10 seconds, then go and begin the boot sequence as this message pops up and the hard drive stops spinning. If I try booting the computer without the hard drive, I end up at the same screen, but the computer doesn't pause while giving you the option to enter the BIOS screen.

I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive while making sure all connections are solid. I've attempted to boot using the Lenovo Onetouch key, but that doesn't do jack unless the computer actually recognizes the hard drive.

The last bit of useful information I have to share is that when I go into the BIOS, it says "Not Detected" under the hard disk field.

I'm traveling for work and need this computer up and running for work reasons, and to keep my Netflix and DVDs running during my off time. I don't have access to any other computers to download a boot disk, and am unable to hook the hard drive up to a desktop and salvage any data.

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks

Solution
try this first
disconnect power, remove the battery, remove the hdd, reinsert the hdd (this tends to clean the contacts), with the battery still out press and hold the power button for 30 seconds (resets the bios usually)
now reconnect power without the battery and try booting booting up.

Sorry to say that it sounds like your hard drive is dead. The pause with the hard drive connected is probably the hard drive trying to spin-up but failing. The good news is you're probably still under warranty.

Yeah, it's dead. I'm working on getting a USB bootable version of Ubuntu going, and ordering an SSD. Is there a specific form factor I have to look for? I haven't really kept up with computers over the last couple years as much as I used to. And is Newegg still considered the best source of products, or is Amazon a better option?

Thanks

Standard 2.5" HDD or SSD will work. Amazon and Newegg are both great for computer parts, but newegg usually has better deals. Tigerdirect is good as well. I just go with whatever has the lowest price on the product I'm looking for.
