Ok, so I have a Toshiba Canvio connect external backup drive. Until last night, it was working properly. Now there is absolutely no power going to it (the led does not light up). I'm not sure if it got jolted a bit in my bag or what, but I know how to take it apart. I want to test to see if the hard drive is damaged, but have no external connectors for it. What would happen if I put the external into my laptop without an os? Could I test it that way?

Solution
This being an external drive with no OS on it, if you put it in your laptop, it will not boot.

Either download and burn to CD some OS you can boot from - Linux LiveCD, Hirens Boot CD....
or get a USB dock to plug that drive into.

Thanks for the rapid response! I tried the Linux LiveCD bootup with the hard drive in it and it worked!! The drive was read and I could access it and make sure my files were still there. I also bought a usb dock as well so I test them easier, but at least now I have some peace of mind. So thank you!
