i5 graphics messing up video game?

My son ordered a used video game, and while the discs look to be in good shape and install goes well, when he actually tries to play it, it lets him set up his character, runs the intro video, and then goes to a blank screen. After a pause, I can hit the space bar and it goes to the regular Windows desktop. (A dialog box pops up, but disappears so quickly I have no idea what it says.)

I uninstalled/reinstalled and got a notice saying it wouldn't work because I didn't have the recommended graphics card. (though I did have the required graphics card...) We're running it on a laptop with a SSD, core i5 processor, and Windows 7.

The box suggests the NVIDIA GeForce 2/3/4, but I figured since the game is 10 years old (the box also suggests it will work with Windows 98) that I'd be okay with whatever came on the laptop.

Is it possible that the graphics card is the issue? I was in distance learning for 10 years, so I'm not a neophyte when it comes to computers, but I've never been into gaming and have paid no attention to graphics/audio/video things.

My son would greatly appreciate any help you can give.

Solution
first, go into system properties and give a list of the system specs. also give the name of the game.

if the game suggests a discrete gpu, even from many years ago, it will still not run great on the intel integrated graphics

i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40 GHz, 4 G RAM. 64 bit, service pack 1 windows 7. Did I forget something?

The game is Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. (I did not look into this carefully enough when my son bought it with his birthday money... I wouldn't be totally upset if we had to decide it just doesn't work.)

Thanks for your input on the integrated GPU issue. I didn't even think about it when we got the laptop.

I'll give that a shot tomorrow night before I throw in the towel. Thanks.

Thanks for all the ideas. It seems crazy that a lower-level graphic operations would completely disable the game, but nothing else makes better sense - and like I said, I know nothing of how games work. I really appreciate your time and expertise.
