I have a Toshiba satellite laptop and I have a hard drive from a second laptop. I use the second hard drive as an external with a SATA to usb cord and this has worked fine until yesterday. Windows Vista wanted to install some update, after it did it now it won't recognize the other hard drive. I need to get acess to the files on it. Does anyone have a solution please?

If the only thing that's changed since the last time you tried accessing the HD and when you no longer could was a Windows update, then you can undo the update by using System Restore.

Click Start. Go to Control Panel. In Control Panel, find the Backup and Restore Center. On the top left in the Backup and Restore Center under the Tasks heading, click on "Repair Windows Using System Restore". The point Windows chooses for you should be OK, or if you'd rather err on the side of caution, you can specify a date when you knew for certain your HD worked properly.

Let us know if that resolves your issue!

I tried that but no luck, Windows keeps saying that the driver is missing but I didn't need a driver before when it worked, autoplay use to just start it up no problem. I'm partially thinking (and hopeing) it might be the sata cord going bad but I haven't checked it out on another comp yet to see.
