I just purchased an aftermarket cooling system for my amd phenom ii x4 840 CPU and I am now trying to over clock it.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/271144-29-phenom

I read this guide ( ^ ) but I am having some trouble since my mobo is different and I don't see all of the options to change certain things such as ram and NB levels.

I have the asus m4a78lt-m LE motherboard with an r9 270 gpu and two 4 gb corsair ram.

I have increased my fbs to 240 from the bios and the voltage to my CPU to 1.4850. I think I need to under clock my ram or NB because when I run prime95 at this setting, the 4th worker starts then immediately stops and I blue screen about 10 seconds later. My CPU temp never gets above 35 c. Any tips or ideas? I really doubt it's my CPU that is causing instability.

Solution
as you are raising fsb then it will automatically increase the ram and nb speed
thus you will need to lower the nb and ram multiplier, keep resulted nb and ram speed as close to stock
and then test with prime 95 and if you get a bsod then you can check this list to figure out which component is causing the problem

Thank you for the list truegenius. So I know that I have to reduce the nb and ram but I can't seem to find where to do that in my bios. Maybe I can upload some pics of the bios options to make it a little easier.

Yes that seems to be my bios exactly! That helps a lot. It seems most of where I'll be spending my time is under the advanced settings tab on the jumperfree configuration. That's where I've been messing with the fsb and the sort. I put CPU overclocking to manual and change the MHz from 200 to say 240.

Sorry for the double post.

My CPU settings at stock are as follows.

Revision: c3
Cache L1: 512kb
Cache L2: 2048 kb
Cache L3: N/A
Speed: 3200 MHz
NB clock: 2000mhz
Ht frequency: 2000mhz
Ucode patch level: 0x10000B6

ok, lets aim for 4GHz stable for now
and i assume that you are aware of risks of overclocking and will be able to restore to default settings by clearing cmos
follow these steps ( sequentially, because auto setting will change them if done randomly)
dram timing mode to both (and note that its is saying 9,9,9 in tcl, trcd, trp respectively)
then set the memory clock value to 533MHz
then set the fsb to 250MHz
then increase cpu voltage by +0.05v (i think it will result in 1.45v)
then increase the VDDNB voltage to 1.25v
load line calibration to 0%
then save and restart and then check in cpuz that everything is set as per our config

Ok I changed dram timing mode to both which brought many more options all set at auto so I changed the tcl tcrd and trp from auto to 9 clock. I'm rebooting now and we will see what we get!

Hmm it gets to the starting windows icon then flashes a blue screen and turns off then tries to boot up again. Same thing over and over.

Edit: should I be leaving the CPU/NB frequency multiplier at auto? And the hyper transport configuration all at auto as well?

2nd Edit: Okay so I dropped the FSB all the way down to 240 before I could fully boot into windows. Here is a pic of the cpuz before and after of the spd and memory. Stock is on the left, the right is at 240 fbs. This is roughly 3800mhz. HT Link is 2400MHZ. I hope this helps.

those cpuz shots were usefull, they showed that we need to tweak memory
increase memory overvoltage to 1.6v
and set
tras 24
trc 34
twr 9
and trtp,trrd, twrd to 8
and decrease ht and cpu/nb multiplier to 8 and vddnb voltage to auto (this will set cpu/nb and ht to 2000mhz (that is 8*250=200)
and then set fsb to 250mhz (first try 240mhz then run prime95 then try 250) and cpu voltage to 1.45v

Okay I will try those changes when I get home tonight. I ran prime95 at the 240 fbs on the previous settings before you mentioned changing the ram again and this is what happened.

Right after the test started, I blue screened and this is what it said.

This might just reaffirm that the ram needs to be changed but I thought you might want to see it. Like I said, I'll change ram tonight and let you know what happens.

So I'm in the bios and I've encountered some potential problems.

The twr can be 8 or 10 but not 9.
The max trtp is 7.
And there is no twrd. Just twr and trrd.

Edit: below are pics of the bios after I tried changing everything I could to the settings you said or close to. The ht link speed just had MHz and not a multiplier so I left that at auto. If you see anything I should change let me know.

Edit2: I booted up with the settings pictured above and I ran prime95. The fourth worker stopped immediately and gave me an error but the other 3 ran two tests with no problems. However, a game I tried starting crashed after a minute or two but no blue screen. This may have been a gpu error because my graphics after that even just web browsing seemed to be off and my internet explorer kept crashing.

Also I found this post about the same blue screen error I had earlier today if it helps with anything.

By the way I really so appreciate all the time and effort you are putting in to help me out. It really means a lot.

128'C ? :ouch:

smps and heatsink are good

use 1600mhz for ht speed and x8 multiplier for cpu/nb this will keep both of them at 2000mhz at 250mhz fsb
it looks like that we need to play with memory timings
this time, set ram at 533mhz and set 9,9,9,24,34 cl,rcd,rp,ras,rc respectively and increase others by +1 and then try for 240 or 250mhz

That 128 C has never changed I don't think. Another sensor program reads it at -128 C haha. I think maybe it doesn't exist so it just says 128. At first I was worried but it literally never goes up or down from that.

Okay I will tweak all of that tonight and let you know how it goes! Thanks again!

Yeah for some reason it doesn't stay at maxed voltage or MHZ. It does jump up when I have prime or a game running but if nothing is running it will stay at a lower mHZ and voltage.

what clock were you running at during prime95 ?, did disabling cool and quite and c1e removed the voltage and frequency fluctuations ?

i think we should lower our aim, lets aim for 3.6GHz now
this time, set everything else at the settings discussed above except fsb, set cpu voltage to auto, set fsb to 205 at first then test then if test successful then set it to +5mhz than previous and keep doing this till you find the max stable
