Hello i managed a 4.4 oc on my fx8320 when running cpu z cpu is always running at 4.4 with the voltage that supports it, before oc it used to clock down when it was idle, how do i make it so that this happens?

Solution

Yes. Cool'n'quiet mode will downclock your CPU and then let it clock back up when extra performance is needed. Tha's totally normal. It does that on my computer too. Even my Core i7 in my other computer does that.

for tests while scaling the overclock higher and higher i do 10 minutes of priority 9 Blend test (i custom set it to do 3 minutes instead of 15 on each number to test). Once i think ive found my desired overclock, at least 3 hours on priority 10. some people will tell you 24 hours, but i prefer a combination of normal use (how long it takes X application to launch) and stress tests (play some games, run dolphin emulator, P95 doesnt always push the CPU in the same way as normal use will)

so i like my overclock og 4.4ghz with 1.43 volts so u reccomend me running prime for about an hour or two then do what i would usually do as in play game, sorry im new to this a stable overclock means no crashes am i correct?

yeah, it could be a couple minutes in, hours, days, after a week, a random BSOD and that would mean "unstable", now HOW stable do you need it to be? If its just gaming, a BSOD every week isnt so bad (you might lose a save point lol), i wouldnt want it (i would remedy it somehow) but think about someone rendering a 3d model/scene for work or something a BSOD and loss of data there can be serious. So im at 4.443 Ghz on my 8320 with the FSB set to 215 i think and the voltage is at auto. its like 1.35-1.38V under load and im stable a week in.

Run it for at least 4 hours. Last time I ran prime95 I had a crash after testing for 3 hours. And I thought it would be ok since prime95 pushes the cpu harder than pretty much any program you would want to use. I played some Battlefield 3 online and after a while I started seeing dips in my framerate. My CPU was still unstable. So I said screw it and downclocked back to a speed I know is stable. Then my game worked good.

some of my cores keep failing should i boost up voltage or downclock

start lower, at 1.35V and 2 bumps at a time past 1.37 one bump at a time. If 2 cores fail (like 7 & 8) thats an entire module, you need more juice. If the core that fails in random (like on core, number 6) you might need to adjust some other settings and check RAM timings

Yup and you can set the minimum clock %. Control panel/hardware/power options/ choose one/advanced options/ scroll to the bottom and it says processor managment or something. Expand that and youbl can set min and max % for the CPU. I set my min to 60% and it idles around 1300mhz. Right when I open a program it jumps to 4.0 GHz and some cores will bounce up to 4.1. Works really well.
