Hello Tom's Hardware forum and users.
I have a problem with my PC and I hope you can helpe me solve it.
First of all, my PC configuration is:
PSU : Seasonic 650W X-Series
Mainboard : Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (bios version 2.90, latest)
CPU : I5 3570K @ 4.5ghz (OFFSET +0.70)
RAM : Kingston HyperX blue 2 x 8GB DDR3
Video : GeForce GTX 770 OC WindForce 3X 4GB (GV-N770OC-4GD)
SSD : Samsung 128GB SATA-III 2.5 inch 830 Series
HDD : Seagate Surveillance HDD 1TB 7200RPM 64MB SATA-III
WD 640GB AAKS SATA-II
Case : CM Storm Trooper with two aditional intake fans on the side
CPU Cooler : Thermalright Macho 120
(I know the last two don’t really matter, but I thought that you must know I have a proper ventilation for my PC)
OS : Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
My problem is regarding my CPU performance.
I recently upgraded (well, waranty refund) my videocard from a Saphire 7950 Dual-X Boost to the GTX 770 OC from Gigabyte. With the Radeon card I had really bad frame rates in games, but I always blamed the card or a whole PC problem. Now, with the upgrade, I get better framerates in almoust all games and I can play some I could not before.
My problem is that I still don’t get the expected performance of my PC. I saw videos on youtube and benchmarks of different sites and people with PC similar to mine get better framerates.
I suspect my CPU is bottlenecking me, but I’m not 100% sure.
Why do I think the CPU is guilty? Here are some things I noticed :
1. Bad framerate in CS : GO. I found out that a PC similar to mine must run this game in 1080p max out around 270-300FPS. Well, my FPS is around 120 (min) and 300 (max). The issue I observed is that if I play a map with 25+ players is that my FPS gets better when other players beggin to die, and this happens even if I camp in base and look to the sky. So the less players alive (even if they are not in my sight), the less work the CPU does, the better the FPS…
2. Bad framerate on Assasins Creed 3. I should get 60FPS no matter what (with v-sync on) but my frames drop even to 40 some times (other people play Black Flag at this FPS, but I’m afraid to instal it). Same issues in GRID 2, lower fps than normal about 25%.
3. In some games I get he same FPS no matter the resolution or details. If I get 80 FPS 1080p max out, I get the same FPS in 1200x720 all and all details set to low. From what I know, this is the case when there is a good video card and a weak CPU, but I have a 3570k clocked to 4.5ghz, how can that be slow?
I stiill have not found yet a good game to work on my computer as it should be.
On default clock, my CPU is even worse. I monitored the clocks and no throrhling happened, so this is not the problem. I thoght the bios had something to do with it, so I update the latest one, but no change.
Keep in mind that I have had this problem since I got the PC*, only that I blamed it on the Radeon.
Strange, my 3dmark 13 scores seem fine, my results in Fire Strike are : Total score 7235, video 8381 and CPU 8531
My questions to you guys are :
1. What do you think is my PC problem?
2. How can I benckmark my CPU? Some test that only depend on the CPU that I can take and compare results
If you have time, also read the “story” below.
*I got this PC in December 2012 (with the Radeon 7950). It was delivered only with the SSD and the Seagate SATA III hard drive, the WD SATA 2 I had from my old PC.
I installed Windows and a game, Saints Row 3, excited to see how it works. It went smootly with 100+ FPS. I really cant remember if at that time I had connected the sata 2 hdd already. OK, I quit the game and I continued to install other software and stuff. I began to benckmark my computer, to see if everything was running as it shoud do. Despite the being very fast overall, I noticed that my SSD scores were a bit slow, and someone sugested me that the SSD might be plugged in a wrong port, and so it was, intead of intel sata 3 port, it was in the asmedia sata 3 port. OK, I opened my case and moved the SSD and sata 3 hdd to the intel ports. When I started the PC, it was saying that bootmgr is missing. OK, I reinstalled Windows 7 and did again the SSD benckmark. The SSD speed was know as it should be, and (I don’t know if placebo or no) the PC felt smoother.
The problem started when I opened Saints Row3 again and my FPS was 45-55. I don’t kow what happened, I changed drivers, reinstalled windows but the problem was still there. I blamed the game, but I began to see issues in other games too. I then plugged back the SSD and HDD to the Asmedia controller, but there was no change. During a year and some months a played few games, because the majority would have gaved me bad FPS.
I don’t understand what happened that time, and I’m not sure I remember exactly, too bad I had not tested more games at the beginning. I don’t know if this is related, but I mentioned it, maybe some of you has an ideaa.
Sorry for my bad english, I live in Eastern Europe and this is not my first language.
I hope some of you can help me solve this.
