How beneficial are CPUs for gaming?

I am looking to upgrade in a couple of months and so im going to start saving up. I currently have an athlon 760k and was wondering if I get a fx6300/8300, how much of a boost in performance would that give. I also want a decent CPU so it wont bottleneck GPUs like the GTX770/r9 280.

Solution
anything on AMD's side is not going to be what you desired coming from the 760k. I believe that thing boosts to 4ghz on it's own anyway. My bro's A105800K boosts to 4.2ghz and that is a Athlon x4 750k just with built in graphics

Trust me, save up the money for Intel. Any AMD is just going to be a sidegrade from what you have now. I know people may get their feelings hurt, but I don't think the money sunk into a 8350 and 990fx mobo (and assuming your power supply is a good one already) is worth it vs even a locked i5 cpu which are VERY stout and a cheapish non overclockable motherboard like logain listed

ideally though you'd save up enough for an unlocked i5 4670k and z87 motherboard. I know how it is being broke believe...

How much you looking to spend on the upgrade? CPU can matter a lot. The 760k is crippled by its lack of L3 cache. A phenom II X4, clock for clock, is faster. Personally, I would look at something like this.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($189.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock B85 Pro4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($64.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $254.98

Because AMD is cheaper id rather go with them tbh. Im quite a skint(tight budgeted) student. Have a PS4 and a PC so cant afford a ton. In terms of upgrade budget id say £150 so an i5 isnt really possible

A GTX 770 or R9 280 would be best off with a CPU such as an FX-8320 or FX-8350, or an i5-4440 or i5-4570.

The FX-6300 isn't a big upgrade, as the Athlon 760K is still a new-ish CPU.

If money is that tight, you could probably put off upgrading your CPU, since the Athlon X4 760K isn't terrible and would probably only bottleneck a few games. Or you could try overclocking it, all AMD CPUs favor overclocking if your motherboard is decent. It's pretty common to hit 4.5Ghz on an Athlon 760K.

My budget isnt VERY tight since I have some money saved up and im tryna save up more. But intel chips cost a bit too much and since I predominantly game I try to save on cpus. So would a FX8300 be a significant step up?

Yes, but probably only a 25% increase or thereabouts in most games (at least the ones that don't use 8 cores, most new games use 4, though that's likely to change in a couple years due to consoles, Mantle, and DX12).

I don't think it'd be worth it at the moment. Doesn't the Athlon 760k use the FM2 socket anyway? Upgrading the CPU would require you to upgrade the motherboard as well, which would definitely not be worth it on a budget.

Yeah its FM2, and i know thats kinda why I wanna change the mobo as well. Plus i think i exagerated the tight budget part a bit. I want a decent CPU so it wont bottleneck the higher GPUS and so i dont need to upgrade it in the future.

Ok I know what you guys are saying about AMD being weaker. But in terms of gaming a lot of people say the CPU isnt that important at least for now, so isnt it better if i save that $50 by gettting a fx instead of an i5, then investing that £50 into a better GPU? In Amazon the 770 is £60-70 more than the 760, so that £50 could help A LOT.

You could actually save even more with going with the fx 8320 and overclocking it to 8350 levels, you don't have to, it boosts to 4ghz on it's own, the 8350 is just at 4ghz at stock and boosts to 4.2ghz

with the money saved from going the 8350 if you'll be able to get the gtx 770 then sure go ahead, but in CPU intensive games you'll suffer a little, the Piledrivers aren't THAT bad, but, Intel is still better but I really understand about being on a budget.

If you don't feel like overclocking, get the 8350 and call it a day. BUT get a good motherboard like Asus r2.0 970 chipset (NOT LE version, doesn't have VRM heatsinks)

Many people have come to this forum crying that their CPU is being throttled and the problem ends up being their sucky AMD motherboard.

Here's a link. You'll want to get a 990FX motherboard if you ever want to crossfire/SLI your GPU though, 970 cripples the 2nd card at 4x speed. But it's fine for just a single GPU

if you want crossfire/SLI, get this one

hope I helped, and with whatever you go with I hope you enjoy your new pc, it'll pay for itself very quickly due to all the cheap PC game sale sites out there including Steam,etc...so don't feel bad about splurging a little and enjoy yourself, building a pc was the best decision I ever made :p
