New PSU installation causing unknown pc failure

Hello, if anyone could provide any tips or a possible reasoning behind my pc failing that would be great.

So, my brother's pc began to produce a horrible stench and then began to smoke. We took it into a local computer store who identified the PSU as having blown up. Rather than spend £84 to be ripped off and have a new, shoddy one fitted, I took it upon myself to order a Corsair CX500M PSU and fit it myself.

Upon fitting the new PSU, and faffing around trying to split the 8 pin CPU lead into 2x4 pins (I wasn't aware it simply separated into 2x4, silly me, took me a while) and then trying to find the actual 4 slot CPU space.. it was working. At least, that's what I thought. After about 15 minutes of my brother firing it up and beginning to use it, it shut off. No pre-warning, just died. So I fired it up a second time, this time shutting off in less time.

The CPU was warm to the touch, the fans weren't spinning (however, I've heard they only start up at a certain heat) so this begs the question, what caused the system to shut down?

I have since then tried to start it up trying to observe what may trigger it to stop, which hasn't actually brought anything to my attention. It runs fine when nothing substantial is running, but it seems the moment a few processes are running and it's working hard, it stops.

Specs:
Intel (R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU 2.4GHz
OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 4gb
P5N-E SLI
GeForce GTX 550 Ti
Barracuda 7200.10 500gb
Corsair CX500M (NEW PSU)

I've looked inside at all the connections and yes, everything is connected properly, at least to my knowledge, all being limited knowledge.

What is the CPU? What is the cooler on it? All CPU fans should run at least at minimum RPM during start up.

Just saw your edit. What cooler does that Quad have? The stock Intel cooler?

I'm honestly not entirely sure what cooler it has, not a stock Intel cooler. A basic case fan with a heat sink?
I do apologise my knowledge is very limited.

(I've just had it running again, it shut off making a 'beep' sound before doing so)

Does the fan on that thing spin?

Yep, spins constantly. The fan on the PSU does not spin, and I can't see it spinning on start up either

* When the computer is on, is the processor fan not spinning, or the power supply fan, or both not spinning?\
If the CPU fan is not spinning, then your CPU would overheat, unless it is a special passive CPU heatsink. You would need to replace the fan (and maybe the heatsink).

If the power suppy fan is not spinning when using the computer, then RMA the power supply. The power supply fan on that model should always spin when the computer is in use (if I read correctly).

Thanks! It works when the PSU fan is spinning, however that requires a manual kickstart to the fan each time. I shall RMA it then, thanks.

Good to hear.
BTW, RMA it with the company you bought it from and have them go ahead and ship you a new model. The reason I say this is because it will probably be a lot easier than filing a warranty claim with the manufacturer, and you will probably get the replacement much sooner. (If you already knew this, great; sorry, if I it came across wrong; just wanted to make sure you pick the easy route. :) )

Get a different power supply , the CX Series are cheap and they use poor capacitors.

I didn't know this! Thank you very much :-) I shall get straight to it.
