No POST No Beeps

My ASUS M5A 88-V EVO mobo w/AMD FX-6100 CPU crashed with a screen freeze, and now will not boot or sound any beeps during boot attempts. LEDs come on, fans spin and drives activate. This system had been running flawlessly for early 3-years, and I didn't recently add any HW or SW and didn't make any changes. I never added any boards to the mobo and use the integrated mobo video.

I have tried all the usual stuff to isolate the failure e.g. disconnect drives, remove and replace memory sticks, clear CMOS memory, check PSU (under load) etc.

I have isolated the failure to the ASUS mobo or FX-1600 CPU, and realize the final isolation between these two is difficult. Now would this help resolve the failure to mobo or CPU?

I removed the CPU and then attempted a restart. The result is the same as described above. Can I then conclude the mobo has failed because there are still no POST beeps?

Any other Ideas about this ubiquitous and persistent diagnostic problem.

This is my build (about 26 months ago)

MOBO: Asus M5A88-V EVO 880G RT
CPU: AMD FX-6100
HD: Seagate 1.5T /ST ST1500DL003
MEMORY: 2X2G KINGSTON KHX1600C9AD3K2/4G RT
VIDEO: USING INTEGRATED ON MOBO
PSU: ANTEC EA 650N GREEN 650W 80 PLUS BRONZE
CD/DVD 1:ASUS (no model no.)
CD/DVD 2:SONY (no model no.)
CASE: ANTEC 300
MOUSE: MICROSOFT
KBD:KENSINGTON
EXPANSIION SLOTS USED: NONE

Please note, this build ran perfectly for about 26 months from the moment I first did a power on, until 2-3 days ago. This is NOT a new build.

While running a ham radio program I have used for 9-12 mo., the screen froze, the mouse cursor disappeared, there was no response from mouse movement or keyboard. Reset and front panel power off were unresponsive, so I switched the PSU off. Since then, all boot attempts have failed with no boot beeps.Yes the mobo speaker is connected and working. Power on spins all fans, panel and mobo LEDs are lit and HDD & DVD drives seem to spin up. The front panel power button works normally both for power on and power off. The front panel reset button dims the HDD LED briefly, then the LED returns to steady on.There is no flicker. Things I have tied:

1 .Followed the suggested no boot procedure, but did NOT remove the mobo for' bread-board' setup.(recall all was well until the screen freeze).
2.Checked all PSU voltages while under load (i.e. PSU connected to the mobo).
3.Tried known good monitor.
4. Disconnected everything except mobo, CPU, CPU fan and PSU.
5. After about 30-45 min of power on, shut down, removed CPU heatsink and touched CPU; it was warm.
5. Disconnected everything except PSU and mobo.
6 .Inspected mobo and case for signs of debris, overheating and burn evidence. Nothing seen.

Tried to boot under each of the above conditions with the same result: no boot, no video and no speaker beeps. I don't have spare CPU or mobo to do part swaps in order to identify the failure (pretty sure it;s mobo or CPU). Duno which to go out and buy!

With CPU removed, and if the mobo is good, shouldn't the mono generate beeps to indicate a CPU failure as part of POST? That makes me think mobo failure.

Any ideas?

Sorry didn't read the whole story :)
Yeah there are two problems: 1st probably CPU overheated, I saw similar problem as yours, 2nd not sure that it's a motherboard problem.
And last it can bad SATA-data cable, I had same problem with my HDD, the whole system didn't boot with old cable but with new one it booted without a problem!

Well against the odds, but with a few minor suggestive symptoms (e.g. this mobo appears to need a good working CPU to generate POST beeps), I bought a new CPU (AMD FX-4130) to replace my suspected bad FX-6100. Wala .... I get a POST, beeps and BIOS video! That;s the good news. Bad news is this.

My build refuses to successfully start W7. Attempts to start W7 ask to repair bad W7 files. I accepted the repair and W7attempted the repair(s) that include an array of tests. All the tests pass, but W7 says the repair failed and ....... 'that is all'.

Anyone know why replacing a bad FX-6100 with a (new) FX-4130 (in the same mobo) would cause a W7 start up failure?

A second question: during POST, the red mobo's DRAM LED lights briefly, then turns off and remains off. I never had a reason to notice this. Is this normal and just part of the POST?

I think DRAM LED shouldn't light red while POST

The DRAM LED blinks briefly on mine when it posts and expect that you'll have to reinstall Windows to accommodate the new CPU.

A recent Ubuntu Live DVD comes in handy as a 'second opinion' when troubleshooting hardware.
