My psu on my Dell studio 540 recently went.

After being told on the dell forums that a Corsair CX500M would be ok as it is standard ATX I purchased this Psu.

Hoever on trying to install it, I have found the power connector for the psu is not the same as off the dell power supply.

The one labelled psu on the corsair is an 8x2 block (no it doesn't split apart into two 4x1 connectors) while the socket on the motherboard is a 4 pin 2x2.

The label on the back of the corair psu where the leads come out says: 8+2 pci-E & 4+4 CPU.

Are there any adaptors I can get for this or is it just a case of I got the wrong advice on the dell website and this isn't a standard atx motherboard?

Would really appreciate any help or advice you can give. This is my first swap out of a PSU>

Solution
This is the (4+4)-pin CPU power connector on all of the CX Series Modular models and it definitely splits in half. You would use one half on your Dell Studio 540's motherboard.

Corsair's CX-500M is a semi modular PSU which means the basic cables you need to attach to the motherboard come in the bundle of wires that cannot be removed from the PSU. The other cables are optional, only plug in the ones you need.

Now look at that bundle of wires and you should find either a 4 pin or 4+4 cpu connector already attached to the PSU, use that one and connect it to your motherboard.

The other modular cables have two leads, one is connected to the PSU to provide power and the other to the motherboard or peripheral. I think you are looking at the wrong side of the cable.

Thanks for your reply ekagori. Yes the cables coming out of the Psu are the 24 pin power cable to mb and the power cable for the cpu. BUT the power cable for the cpu has a 4x2(don't know the technical term for it) block on the end - with each 4x1 block connected to a 4 wired cable - also the block does not separate as it is not an eps atx12v 8-4 pin. According to the box it is an eps atx12v 8 pin,

The cpu power socket on my motherboard is a 2x2 4 pin socket.

From the research i have done so far it seems my studio 540 MB has a Atx power v2.0 psu connector which is a 4 pin P4(square) rather than a Atx power v2.1 psu connector which is an 8 pin .

Does anyone know whether there are adaptors you can get and where would I get them in the UK?

Thanks ko888 and ekagori. I couldn't acctually see the line but on pulling them hard I did manage to separate them. The picture did help. Sorry I couldn't also thank ekagori as I 'd already selected ko888s solution. Thanks for helping ekagori!
