What card is better? I want the card that will last the longest (at least 3 yrs). Will VRAM be more important in the future? Is the 780 worth the 30-40$ extra over the 290?

the 780 will perform better, unless you have 3 monitors or run at very high resolutions.

both should last 5+ years if you treat them right, and keep them cool.

They trade blows on different games, but over all performance is similar. The 290 is more value for your money though.

I personally use a 780. But if you can shell out a few more bucks I'd go with the 290X or stay with a 290. They are both so similar ( 290/780) that you are simply going to be choosing features for the most part. 780 has game streaming with an nvidia shield and game recording , yet 290 has true audio and better performance for higher resolutions. But the 290 will usually be a bit hotter than an 780 yet does amazing in open CL tasks. With more ram this allows you to run more textures in higher resolutions, which is a necessary benefit if you plan to go further than 1600p+

with mantle, amd just stepped back into the max performance range, so yes they trade blows depending on the game. the amd card does have more vram, but you wont use it unless using 3 monitors or playing above 1440p.
