To put it simply I want to buy a smartphone or small smartphone like device about the size of a Iphone or one of the older droids that has its wifi networking features enable without a any provider at all like at&t or version.

I am not sure if unlocked cellphones would have this feature enabled. The reason i don't just get a smartphone plan is i could not care less about being able to make phone calls, text or have 4g data plan literally all i want is to have internet access from something the size of phone. also I don't want to be charged +$40 a month just to not use anything but the wifi. Plus the next option is kind of cool even if it fails

the one way around smartphones all together is I would think is to get ahold of a pico-itx, mobile-itx motherboard and literally build one from scratch and install a low requirement Linux operating system and start screwing around with it and eventually use a lithium battery and create my own case

But if I can at all get around literally creating my own smartphone device i would like to.

Just in case your curious why I want to create or buy something like this i want to use it with some sort of VPN tunneling protocols or at least HTTPS or other secure TCP or UDP protocol to connect to my desktop remotely and either control it or at least access files that will stream or download from there.

Ooh and just to get this out of the way, yes i am massive nerd and I am ok with that.

What i'm finding is that that smartphones are in most circumstances fully function-able without a service provider aside from text and voice (obviously).
Also one alternative i was find that you could get away with using a really complex, basically smartphones with out the "phone" aspect like Samsung Galaxy Player or the new sony walkmans or of course a ipod touch.

The idea of trying to get ahold of one of the new mobile-itx motherboards and constructing my own device still sound super cool so i may do it anyway.

1. Is a few dollars a month for a prepaid phone really out of bounds? Some companies charger $10 per month or less to keep a phone on the network. I'd buy a Samsung Galaxy S3 or old iPhone and activate it with www.Ting.com for $6/month plus usage.

2. Most unlocked phones allow what You want.

3. Are You looking for an iPod Touch?

4. There are many 4"-5" android tablets. I"m not current on these, so eBay's search will be Your friend.
