Decided to make my own thread because I can't find a solid answer.

Just built my first computer. Everything is brand new, not used at all :

~MoBo - MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
~CPU - Intel i5 5670k
~Graphics - MSI GeForce GTX 770 Twin Frozr 2gb
~RAM - G. Skills TridentX 2x8gb 2400
~HDD - Seagate Barracuda 1Tb 7200rpm SATA
~CD/DVD - standard ASUS CD/ROM SATA

Everything is put together and in the case. Trying to install Windows 8.1 Pro Full retail version. When starting it up (with windows disc in CD/ROM) :

~Went into BIOS and enabled SATA port 1 & 2 (HDD & CD/ROM only two SATA cables plugged in).
~Made sure SATA type was in ACHI mode
~Made the Boot option #1 the HDD (changed this order several different ways with the CD/DVD as the first option) with the CD/ROM in the #2 position.
~Saved configuration and rebooted

After reboot, I hit F11 to select boot controller. Selected HDD (I've done this process several times, different ways, and have selected the CD/ROM sometimes because the HDD doesn't show). Windows then loads and the language screen shows. I get through all the initial steps (accept terms, product key, custom) and then get to the "Where do you want to install windows" part...

Sometimes the HDD shows up... Sometimes it doesn't... When it does, it will not let me partition the drive (Get the error message that I can't partition this drive). Try to load driver with the driver disc for the MB, doesn't work at all... Refresh/Rescan, nothing...

I tried to create a partition manually in the troubleshoot portion of the install by going to advanced options and entering the cmd. Accessed DISKPART and went through that whole process (once again, sometimes it reads the HDD in the LIST DISK, and sometimes it doesn't) and still won't create a partition.

I also tried to switch SATA ports between the CD/ROM and HDD, exactly the same issues.

So my problem is that I can't get my HDD to partition. I've tried a few other things that I can't remember at the moment, but I'm at a frustrated loss and would appreciate anyone's help on the subject.

If further information is needed or any questions to help solve the problem, just ask please!

Thank you!

Hi

There is a problem either with power or data cable or faulty hard drive or motherboard

swapping hard disk and DVD drive from port 1 to 2 is a good idea but did you do it at motherboard end or hard disk end

You need to try hard disk on a different data cable.

Does BIOS show you the Seagate Hard drive every time you bootup.?
If not it is it probably faulty.

Do you have a spare SATA hard disk which you know works.?
could be 2,5" or 3.5" type (SATA I, II or III)
See if Windows Setup recognises it.
[This is to test motherboard, cables and SATA ports]

I dont think there are any standard PC's which need a Hard Disk Controller Driver when SATAis in AHCI mode and Windows 8 or 8.1

You could try changing out of AHCI mode back to ATA...

You could try changing out of AHCI mode back to ATA Compatible in BIOS but it is unlikely to make any difference if new disk is dead or dying

If you have no spare SATA hard drive do you have a spare Desktop PC which you could connect the new Seagate hard disk to as a second hard drive?

If the new disk is not recognised in new PC as well it should be returned to seller as dead on arrival

It was definitely the hdd was faulty. Bought a new one cause you responded right when I was driving by the computer store. WD black. Absolutely no issue what so ever. I guess I just needed someone to break the news to me! Thank you so much!
