That is just the specific technology used. ADSL, cable, fiber....all different, but to the end user pretty much the same result. The router spits out an ethernet signal and/or a WiFi signal.
Again, whatever speed you pay your ISP for....that's it when talking to the outside world.
When connecting to other devices on your internal LAN, a 'faster' WiFi may help.
