Hi everybody,

i'm computer tech, and i'm facing to a problem i never encountered, without finding an explanation on the web.
I have 2 USB 2 Icy Box enclosures for 2 HDD per enclosure
I bought a 3TB 3,5" SATA III HDD (Seagate Barracuda 7200.14). I had some recognition problems because the Icy box enclosure did not recognize the full size (only one partition of 746GB seen) but after some researches and test i solved it installing an update for Intel Rapid Storage Technology, plugging the 3TB HDD on a USB 3 dock and using GTP partition table. During the test i installed Seagate DiscWizard and Paragon Partition manager. Everything is ok for this one.

But since, after restarting the computer (win 7 Ultimate x64), 2 of my HDD show extra unallocated space. I'm backing up the data for security before performing test.

The 2 HDD are WD 500GB each. There are in two different Icy Box enclosure, and as you can see on the picture, it shows in the disk manager a total size of 698GB (750GB HDD) with 232.88GB unallocated for one, and 1To with 465GB unallocated for the other one. I precise that i'm not making a mistake between HDD, it's originaly 500GB HDD.

I have met something like this with a HDD showing 3000TB, but the HDD was dead, in my case, the 2 HDD are readable and writable correctly. When the backup will be completed, i'll try to allocate the extra space and see what happens and try on my linux computer, but first, i prefer to have your opinion.

Do you have any idea why this occurs? Do i risk to lose data? How to solve it? May be the update of IRST has something wrong, or Seagate DiscWizard or Paragon partition manager.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerly, Aguilo

PS: sorry for my english, it is not my native language.

Solution
I think i've found. For my first problem with the 3TB HDD, i installed intel rapid storage technology. For many reasons i re-installed it with "repair" mode, since, it seems to be good. I don't have extra unallocated space anymore. It seems to be the IRST installation which was corrupted.

I don't know how to set my own thread to solved, can somebody do it for me please ?

Hi, thanks for your answer. I can't try it as internal, i'm using laptop since i retake my studies and i don't have PC tower to try. I wait for the backup and i try it with the dock and linux. During the night, i had a flash, the wrong total size of each disk is exactly the right size of another one, and one time, i did'nt have a real 750GB HDD, the 500GB HDD wrong size saying 750GB was 1To. i plug a real 750Gb, and the 500GB HDD show 750GB wrong size. It's not regular and it is not allways the same HDD which is wrong.

So my hypothesis is that : all the HDD use a big USB HUB. Till now, i did not have as many HDD. So may be i'm facing to a collision problem, like in network. At initiliazation, the informations about a disk are used for another one, and the computer interpret it as unallocated space. It seems logical. But i need to finish the backup to try something. (3 TB to transfer)

it seems to be 2 possible issues : the 2 HDD are dead or windows is fucking high ! I tried to allocate one of the unallocated space, it was complicated. As i expected it's not possible, but it throws some problem with the partitions table, i had some difficulties to come back to a normal partition table. GParted show the correct size but throws exceptions when i try to write partition table, and windows says there is a problem, after some try, it let me write a new partition table and format the partition, but there is always unallocated space on windows. I tried on my USB 3 dock, there is no diference, and i tried on another windows laptop, there is the unallocated space.

I checked the constructor of each, i was wrong in my first post, the first HDD is a Seagate ST350041 and the second one is a Samsung HD502ij. If the problem was only on one hdd, i would say, " ok, it's dead", but the two different model HDD, at the same time, with a similar problem, i think there is something else. When all the backup are finished, i'll try to update the firmware of each hdd.

I'm wondering if the update of IRST or the installation of Seagate wizard/paragon had not introduced a shit in the firmwares.

Set it for you. Also that a really weird issue. Not sure why IRST would bug out like that and cause that issue, but thank you for coming back and informing other people that might have this issue. (and now I know one possible cause for this issue in the future)
