It depends upon what year the computer was manufactured. Did it not come with an install CD/DVD?

If it didn't come with Mac OS, you can buy a copy and you should be able to use it. Otherwise, you can buy Windows.

There's always Linux. I just started using it, and I love it. I'm using Mint Cinnamon. You could at least try it. It is free, after all. If you don't like it you could start over with a different OS.

Linux is awesome, and I recommend that you try it even if you buy Mac Os or Windows. Ubuntu is a good starter distro.

I have not used Ubuntu, and I am not ripping on it, but Mint seems to be a good transition from Windows (if that's what you're used to). At least that's my opinion.

Id go with mavericks. You may have to buy a hard drive with the software preinstalled or you may be able to run snow leopard and then install mavericks from the mac app store. Snow leopard is about $30 AUD and mavericks is free.
