Hey guys, I'm new here and I need some help with my rams. Previously my system had only 4 gigs of ram (Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz), so I decided to upgrade some more. So I bought a dual channel kit of another 8gb same model so I now have 12gb. Link here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144 . My problem is, that when I turn the xmp profile on, it stays at 1600mhz for the current session (I have MSi's Click Bios II and OC genie II). If I reboot it disables itself and reverts back to 1333. It doesn't give me any errors though. What could be the problem ?

My system specs:
i7 3770 non-k 3,4ghz
Gainward GTX 660 Ti
12GB Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz
Thermaltake Litepower 600W Power Supply
MSi z77a-gd55 Mobo

EDIT: Some clarification : I set the XMP profile on in the bios, system reboots, stays at correct 1600mhz value for the current system session, untill I boot or reboot my system. Then it goes back to 1333Mhz.

Solution

First of all you can move the cooling fan to the rear of the heat pipe cooler, set the fan up so it pulls air through the cooler...
The 4G and 8G kits were independently tested matched kits, tested to run together at their rated specs., that does not mean they'll all run together as 12G total at the same specs.

You'd have been better off to have gotten a 16G 2 x 8G matched kit as they would have run together problem free!

I suggest removing the 4G kit and just run the 8G matched kit, then your XMP should work problem free.

Or totally forget XMP profile and find manual timings both kits will run together at, basically find the common ground both kits can run together error free!

Which will more than likely be 1333mhz your motherboard is reverting to.

Thanks for your answer !
If I wanted 16gigs I would've bought them, problem is, even if I wanted that, my aftermarket cooler takes up 1 dimm slot, so fat chance for quad channel. [Badluck all around for me :( ] Removing 4 gigs does not seem like a solution for me, Why would anyone downgrade ? Also I don't know everything about oc-ing and I wouldn't want to mess with the timings since I don't really know how and what they do. Also, I find this whole XMP thing a fraud. Why would they advertise it with 1600 when it runs at 1333 and there are high chances that the 1600 frequency would not work except if all the planets aligned in one summer day. Why are they making these simple things so difficult? . These bastards should be sued.

EDIT: You meant dual chanel 16gigs, sorry. Kind of pricy for me in my country. Even the 8 gigs were a bit more than I would've paid, and turns out I actually paid more than they deserve.

OOH Attitude! :pfff:

I am trying to help you!

Well then how are you possibly running the full 12Gigs of memory in the first place if one memory slot is blocked by the cooler?

What aftermarket cooler are you running???

Apologies if I gave that impression :) And I trully appreciate any help !:D Ok so my english is not that good or I forgot to mention this : I had one stick of 4gb corsair vengeance, and bought another two sticks of 2x 4gbs. My mobo has 4 dimm slots, and one is blocked by the stupid cooler (Zalman CNPS10X Optima 2011) so that's how I run 12 gigs at the moment. I'll provide an image with the actual setup if necesarry :D I actually never knew about the xmp thing until after I bought the 8 gigs. Always thought the damned things run at the specified frequency. Kind of pissed off with this situation actually.

First of all you can move the cooling fan to the rear of the heat pipe cooler, set the fan up so it pulls air through the cooler and exhausts out the rear of the case, that will clear your memory slots.

Secondly the single 4G stick kills your dual channel motherboard memory capabilities, so you should only run the matched 8G kit to be able to use the dual channel memory feature, then your XMP profile will work.

Just because you have the single memory module does not mean you have to put it in the machine, especially if it is killing your performance, and it is!

Thanks for your help and input :) One final question, is that extra performance really gonna show it's face while gaming? I wouldn't wanna scrap 4 gigs of ram if it's not that big of performance increase. Also, regarding the cooling fan, moving it to the rear wouldn't work since it's not double sided like most coolers. Although I could swap it with one of the coolers from my case (Raidmax Augusta) since i've got seven of them. Also, coud this incompatibility occur due to some settings in the bios? Or if maybe the new sticks are not set in the proper channel configuration? I'm thinking I could've put the new sticks side by side in different slot colors, i dunno , just a thought.

Try manual set up, with the sticks at 1600, 9-9-9-26, 1.57 and look for the CPUVTT or VTT voltage and raise it about + 0.075 (that's your MC (memory controller) voltage and see if that stabilizes all. Then can check in CPU-Z in the memory tab and see if it shows single or dual channel, I think your mobo supports flex mode so if it does you'll have 8GB runnning in dual and the odd ball 4 GB will be in single channel mode

Hello tradesman, I couldn't find CPU VTT anywhere, or VTT or anything related to MC. I can though, manually setup the sticks at 1600 but can't find a timing tab execpt someting that lets me choose between LINK and UNLINK and AUTO. I also tried the OC Genie feature and it boosted the cpu to 4,1 ghz and the rams to 1600 but after I rebooted to see if it still does the same thing, and it went back to 1333. Although I havent swapped the sticks to be in the same color into the slots until after I turned off OC Genie (wasn't too satisfied with the temps). Had no issues with the rams while they were at 1600 played some games and nothing hitched.
Should I post some screens with the bios UI ?
here's OC Genie activated : http://s14.postimg.org/nfrjb38j5/image.jpg

Already went into regular bios and found nothing like that and actually I can't enable XMP except from the desktop. I'll try and fiddle around with them some more and see what I can manage. :)

EDIT: So I've searched through the bios settings and did not find the settings you specified. But I've manually set the frequency to 1600mhz and the voltage went up automatically to 1.53v ( or something like that, it just varies).and now it looks like it's going to stay like that. That X.M.P. crap seems useless now. I'll do some more testing but I hope it will stay like that. Also Corsair's Support, after a slow response, did not help with anything, they just told me to call the vendor I bought it from and ask for a compatible replacement. Like that's gonna happen.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it :) Have a nice day !
