Losing 40 gb

Hey guys I recently moved 40 gb from my desktop to my external hard drive but after I moved it im missing 40 gb any idea why?

OK. I think we need a clearer picture of what is happening.

You moved 40GB of files from your C to an external drive?
And now your C drive is now showing itself to be smaller than it was previously?

Unknown. Moving files from one drive to another doesn't make a drive suddenly appear to be 'smaller'.
Overall size? Free space? Unknown as of now.
