I'm trying to fix a Packard Bell laptop for a family member that came preinstalled with Windows 8. I've determined that the hard drive is dead, as it does not work in either my own laptop or in my external USB case. I've plugged an old harddrive of mine into the laptop in order to reinstall the OS, and I've created a bootable USB drive with Windows 8 by using this guide: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15458-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-create-windows.html
However, this pc uses UEFI instead of BIOS, which I have not had any experience with. If I understand correctly, you have to enter the UEFI settings via Windows 8, which I for good reasons can't do with the prior disc being dead. I've tried plugging in the USB drive and hoping for the best, but the pc doesn't recognize any bootable devices.
The USB drive is formatted with the settings specified in the forum post linked to above. I am at a loss as to what I should do, this is new territory for me. All the guides I've read makes this seem as easy as plugging in the drive and starting the installation with no need for accessing UEFI settings, but that is not happening here.
Any tips?
