Hey all,

I am new to this site but I decided to create a post as I am at my breaking point. Around one year ago I purchased a Radeon HD 7950 as an upgrade for my gaming pc. Ever since this purchase, my system has been plagued with numerous system crashes. I will try to outline my issues as best as possible:

There are very few circumstances when I can see an error message. Basically, the screen crashes and I see vertical lines of varying colours depending on the colour of what was on the screen before the crash. For example if I was playing a game that was mostly displaying something in yellow at the time, the screen would crash and I would see yellow vertical lines. When this happens, sometimes I can still hear game sound and continue chatting on skype, but the pc will not respond or fix itself and as such the lines are there permanently until I hard reset.

The other crash that I receive is when the pc just freezes and after a few seconds the screen just turns black and states that there is no signal. This time, there is no sound whatsoever and as such the only way to recover is again to hard reset.

Lastly, sometimes my pc will crash and then I will receive the following: "the display driver has stopped working and has recovered". This is what led me to believe that it was either my graphics card or my drivers that were the fault of the problem. This problem happens very rarely and the other two crashes are much more common.

Due to this, I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times(and on some occasions used driver sweeper to ensure that everything was uninstalled). I also tried rolling back to previous drivers but I have had no such luck. I have now reinstalled windows twice and I still receive these issues with the pc crashing every hour or so due to one of the above errors. The weird thing is, placing my old graphics card back in the machine gets rid of all problems immediately. This is why I came to the conclusion that the only possible explanation was a faulty graphics card.

I recently decided to do an rma on the card and around a week later I received the same graphics
back and I was told that the graphics card is working perfectly and as such I am not entitled to a replacement. This has now left me completely perplexed as the problems only occur when this graphics card is in the machine and I am unsure how to continue to troubleshoot/fix the issue.

If it helps, I ran a program called "who crashed" in order to identify problems and it came up with the following:

On Fri 04/04/2014 18:12:56 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\040414-40856-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: atikmpag.sys (0xFFFFF880048E5D88)
Bugcheck code: 0x117 (0xFFFFFA800E09D4E0, 0xFFFFF880048E5D88, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\atikmpag.sys
product: AMD driver
company: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
description: AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that the display driver failed to respond in a timely fashion.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: atikmpag.sys (AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.).

In addition, I am not sure of the relevance of this but whenever my pc crashes and I am forced to do a hard reset I am unable to connect to the internet until I unplug and put the wireless device back into the pc however the device I am now using is relatively new and the crashing issues have been around for around a year now so I do not believe this has anything to do with it but figured I would mention it anyway. Also of note, the crashes are not causing any sort of bsod.

Any help in this situation would be appreciated as its very frustrating to deal with.

Summary of Troubleshooting Attempts:
Reinstalled Windows (twice)
Rolled back the drivers
Reseated the card (Multiple times)
Used driver sweeper to remove the drivers and completed a fresh install (multiple times)
Monitored for overheating but all temperatures are fine

Thanks for taking the time to post those links. Even although I have already tried the amd clean uninstall utility (sorry I forgot to mention that) it was at least nice to know that I was using the right drivers. In regards to overclocking, I believe my cpu has been overclocked. I purchased this gaming pc prebuilt and im pretty sure the cpu is overclocked. I am not sure by how much though, im quite new at this.

I am not at home right now but I will post the model when I return. I am fairly certain I have the gpu connected properly. The pc came prebuilt and switching out the graphics card was my first experience of opening up a pc. I pretty much just opened it up, removed the 6 pin connector, unscrewed the current one and then removed it from the slot, I then placed the new one into the slot, screwed it in and connected it with two 6 pin connectors.
