I've just installed SteamOS for the first time on a new build (I didn't want to pay for Windows) It seemed to have installed fine but when I reboot it shows the steam logo and then i see the cursor for a second or less and then my monitor flashes black, on and off. I've tried the tab+space+enter and also tried re-installing but nothing seems to work. Please help
Heres my build: 4GB DDR3 @1400Mhz Intel Pentium LGA1150 @ 3.0GHz MSI 7770 w/ 1GB of VRAM 1TB Samsung HDD @ 7200 RPM MSI H81M-E35

You should bear in mind that Steam OS is currently a beta, so probably not a good choice for your only OS, and is quite picky about hardware. I'm not sure that it supports your video card yet.

Do yourself a favour and choose a more mainstream Linux distribution.

Can you recommend any good, more user friendly versions of linux?

Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, OpenSuSE. All comprehensive, user friendly, and highly developed. The great thing is that, being free, you can try another one if you don't like a particular one.

Don't expect to be able to run all games on Linux. Some will run easily with the help of the Steam client, some with rather more trouble, using Wine (a Windows "emulator"), some not at all.
