Hi guys,

I do 3D rendering and CPU cooling is one of my top priorities. I have read wonderful things about Delta fans (yes I know they are loud and I don't mind that) and I want to attach one to my radiator and possibly another to my case. I want to install these fans

but I also want a fan controller so I don't have them blowing at full speed all the time. I'm looking at this controller
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811992012
but I am not sure if it will support them. It has sufficient power to run the fans but I'm not sure about if the fans can connect to it. The fans have 3 pin connectors but this controller has 4 pin connectors.

I need to now if this controller will work before I order anything. If I need any sort of adapter that's fine or if I need a different controller then please give me an example if you can.

Thanks

The Connection is not a problem, and neither should the Power be.

If you want to be on the safe side the Lamptron FC-2 is the recomendation for those fans.

This is probably a silly question but when plugging the fan's 3 pin connector into the FC-2, would I then also have to plug the fan's larger connector into my power supply? It says "optional 4+3-pin" on the specs for the fan so does that mean it would run entirely on the 3-pin if I was using the controller?

Well this didn't end well. The good news is that the fan works nicely (and is as loud as my Dyson vacuum on 100%) and so does the fan controller. I turned the computer on and it got to the desktop and everything seemed fine. The bad news is that Open Hardware Monitor said my CPU was at 97C! I turned everything off and am scared to turn my PC back on given that my i7 920 Bloomfield has a critical temp of 67C.

I am at a loss as to what happened. My CPU has a Corsair H50 self contained water loop on it which has always worked fine. I didn't even remove the cooler from the CPU/mobo, I just removed the stock fan and put on the Delta Fan. Again the fan worked fine and I could control it but the CPU was cooking. I am not sure whether to try reseating the cooler and regreasing it, or if I should just put my stock CPU cooler back on until I can figure something out.

Thankfully I have a mobile workstation so I am not in any sort of rush to get the desktop up and running again. Anybody have any suggestions on what I should do?

The delta might not handle the static pressure that water cooled fans need to handle. You could try to pwm the delta so the mb vill handle its rpm speed deppending on the temp. Dont forget to monitor the temp if you do so. If that doesnt work you have the answer that the deltas dont like sitting directly in front of the radiator because the static pressure handeling in those fans might be to low.

It would seem the issue was not the Delta, the controller or anything new. I restored the old fan and everything else to how it was before I put in the Delta and the controller and my CPU was still pushing 100C. Unfortunately I think I may have knocked my water cooler lose or broken in it some way. At this point I'm going to have to reseat/replace the cooler and try again. This is a 4 handed job (the hole in my case does not line up with the CPU so the motherboard needs to come out) So It'll probably be 2 weeks before my more computer competent friend visits and helps me. Hopefully after all this I'll have a working rig again. At least I have my mobile workstation for now.

I managed to fix my computer AND make it run colder. It turns out my old H50 cooler was damaged when I added the new fan. It needed longer screws and I inadvertently damaged the radiator. So I went to MicroCenter and bought myself a Cooler Master 212 Evo.

With the air cooler and the Delta fan I have managed to shave 5C off my idle and load temps. I was even able to overclock my i7 920 up to 3.3 GHz (stock 2.66) and still stay under 60C. All in all the 212 Evo and the Delta fan are working better than the H50 ever did. Makes me wonder what the H50 and the Delta could have done together.

Either way I've spent less than if I bought a new water cooler and its colder than the old cooler so I will call this a win.

Thanks for the advice Ezoz.
