Sold my old xp machine to a friend, he set's it up and gets that boot error (worked 1 hour before selling it to him)

After trying various BIOS options I hooked it into my windows 8 machine as a slave.

All the file's still intact and working ran checkdisk and defrag. Changed boot order and the same error.

Anyway I can fix this while using the drive as a slave, and without a XP disk?

Did you try using a hard disk utility to check for bad sectors? Did you try using the manufacturer's disk check utility to see if the hard drive has any problems?

What was the exact error message? Is it a corrupt registry or missing?

did you make sure to use chkdsk /r /f
r will locate bad sectors. f will fix these problems.

Try to use these utilities in a DOS boot up disc, also.
