I'll only use my RAM alongside my other parts of this pc for games like theif and heavily modded minecraft.

CPU: (standard) Intel Core i5 3570
GPU: Soon to be GTX 750 Ti
^i'm fairly sure those are all you need to know, i think i'll be looking at 8-16 Gigs of RAM?

Solution
thanks m8 , you have a gateway dx4870 motherboard.
from the specs i can find for this board it will only accept dual channel 1333mhz ddr3 240pin ram with a maximum of 16gb
I would recommend you install a memory speed no higher than the native 1333mhz which is native to that board
You will need no more than 8gb of ram to max out most games out there,
i would recommend a ram with a cas latency of 9 or lower and a good brand with a lifetime warranty such as
corsair/kingston/mushkin/gskill i personally use mushkin ram but that is a matter of preference all these brands are good.
The lower the cas latency the faster the ram will communicate with your cpu so cas7 will be better than cas 9 etc
Because your board has dual channel memory you can...
hi kyledabaws ,
what motherboard m8 ?
choice of ram depends on quite a few things ,
what ram your motherboard will accept
you will need no more than 8gb for just gaming , even the latest games on max recommended reqirements like crysis3 , farcry3 etc
will only utilise up to 8gb ram
the latency of your ram will determine how fast your ram can communicate with your cpu
then there is bandwidth and ram speed
without knowing your board it is hard to recommend ram for it

Ok, so i'm not really sure what motherboard this is, id bought the PC before i'd even known computers were modular. And am not very sure how to check. Will this require me to open my PC?

Because your board has dual channel memory you can put 2 x 4gb sticks to achieve your 8gb or 4x2gb sticks either will be fine
you can still install 16gb of memory but i think that's a bit of overkill for gaming
so what you want is ddr3 240pin 1333mhz ram with a cas latency of 9 or lower
