I have a 400W PSU And I'm going to buy amd's fx 6300. HD 7870 also seems like the best choice for me. I don't have anything else in my system that is particulary power hungry. So will I have to downclock my GPU so that PSU won't die? Or will it run normaly?
EDIT: PSU: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2796#sp
also, I will buy a new PSU but not just now. I can get a used one from my brother in two months or so and it's 550W if i remember correctly
EDIT: OK I just went into the attic and found a somewhat louder but 420W PSU. Will that be enough?

Solution

@the gigabyte psu: it's not adequate. on gigabyte website, lists peak power of 348w, not continuous power. two +12v rails peak (Not continuous) at 168 and 180w respectively.

i don't think recycling an older psu will help.

i'd suggest upgrading the power supply first, then buy the gfx card.

You MIGHT get away with that PSU but I wouldn't recommend it. Sometimes underclocking GPU's/CPU's can have some strange effects on your system. If I were you I'd get a slightly higher wattage PSU that I could be certain would run my card at base clock.
