Hey guys I have a corporate network lan cable at my place and I have a wireless router and I was wondering how to set up wifi after connecting the lan to the router for use on my laptop. The thing is I messed around on the configure page (192.168.1.1) but none worked. Also the IT guy has an IP set up on my corporate laptop so that the lan only works on the ip so now I suppose I have to put the same ip's in the router settings page? but where? and also do I have to put the same lan adapter ip's in my wireless adapter on laptop for the wireless to work? I'm confused please help me.

Hi

Since you have a corporate laptop it is likely to be locked down to prevent you configuring it
You usually get allowed to connect to an existing wifi network which will only allow this to be a public network
This assumes you know the Sid (wifi network name) & password
Usually these are on label or instructions.

Take the wifi device & laptop into work and have your it guy set it up

I am not sure what you mean by corporate LAN cable unless you are at work
Usually at home broadband comes via cable or telephone cable .
Or in a block of flats a network cable from a switch or router with a internet connection.

So some more details required about set up
And if your laptop account lets you configure networking
You usually have to login to the wireless device before getting to configuration screen. Address of config page is usually in instructions but can be re configured

Hey Mike,
Thanks for your response,
I have other devices and would like to use the router as a wifi adhoc for home (company quarters inside campus). I previously used another laptop to use the inbuilt adhoc functionality fir wifi but it was erroneous as it would drop the connection every 2 minutes or so. I got a router but now the problem is that the LAN cable that the company is providing to home (quarters) is connected to company servers and modded in a way that allow a specific set of ip's to work with it. like lets say my corporate laptop was preconfigured by the it guy with an ip so the lan internet was accessible, I used a simple ipconfig/all to get the ip and set it as the ip for the other laptop I adhoc'd with so the lan worked on it and I was able to get wifi at my place. Obviously the ip was set on the ethernet adapter and not the wifi adapter and the connection was shared with its wifi adapter to distribute signals. There is that, but where I am facing the issue is the setup of my new router which seems vague and leaves too many details to be filled. There is the Ethernet/Lan cable that can be plugged in the router. Where do I enter the ethernet/lan IP that was provided on corporate laptop? Lets say I have a new laptop and I want to use the router with my new laptop. So where do I begin? DO I have to enter that ip as the receiver's IP in order to connect to the wifi? Like match my new laptops wifi adapter IP with the corporate ethernet IP so it connects? or is it all done in the router interface and all I have to do is connect to the hotspot and enter the password?
I know this post is a likely tl;dr but I would be very grateful to you if you can help me out with this problem.

Hi

You need advice from who ever manages the network
If you have several devices needing internet access but no connection to each other normally a wireless access point with a Ethernet connection would be easier to set up
You need to confirm if dhcp server is provided by network which will issue your devices with a I/P address .
Home devices issue I/P address something like 192.168.1.n. (n. In range 2 to 255)
But business & colleges need a larger range of numbers

Without a lot of details which you do not seem to have you need help from network management

Yes I want to set up a wireless access point with a Ethernet connection with encryption using the router. Cant I get the same functionality as adhoc (connectify) through the router? And btw this is a wifi enabled place but its only available for the corporate gadgets, they wont give out ip's to other devices nor the passwords so I was hoping to share the internet available from the ethernet through the router using the IP address given to me for the corporate laptop for all my devices.
