Hi, probably a frequently asked question, I have an Acer Aspire X3200 it has a VGA output running a VGA monitor, I want to use dual screens. The other output is HDMI, I have another VGA monitor what do I need to convert this and run it as the second monitor or would it be better to invest in a new HDMI monitor ?

Solution
You would need an ACTIVE(more expensive[best guess 30-60 dollars] because it converts digital to analog) adapter. If you have a DVI-I port, you would be able to use a passive adapter(dirt cheap).

If you find the current monitor is good and you want to hang onto it it for a while longer, you can seek such an adapter, but if you are in the market anyway it would be better to just replace it(the monitor would also have the required HDCP[can not get that over analog] for certain HD video playback formats as well).

I think you may have misread.

They have 2 VGA only screens and want to run them both, but only have a single VGA and HDMI port. In general converting HDMI to VGA requires an active adapter, but some rares cases a passive would work(not something I would be willing to bet on).
