Replacing a hard drive, how do I keep the files?

However the question isn't exactly that simple. I have a windows installed on C: and I have all of my data and stuff in D:. When I installed Windows (Win Server 2008 R2), I somehow (as in I don't remember what method I used exactly) got Windows to use the D: drive for all of my User Profiles.

I need to replace D:, and so I just copied Users to a new drive, assigned that new drive to D:, but it doesn't appear to work. It will only automatically log me in to Administrator profile and does not appear to recognize the copied folder.

Any help?

What can I use to clone it? Right now I am in the process of using Windows Server Backup. Would that work, or is it not the same thing?

And as for making new users and then replacing the files, I may just do that.

Okay, I've cloned the drive and assigned it the drive letter D:, which is what it is supposed to be. However, things have not gone back to normal and whenever I log in to any profile it gives me an error saying

"C:\\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable."
