Hello,

I haven't built a machine out in over 7 years. I have a home server (Dell PowerEdge 1500SC, dual P3 80530 1.26 GH, 4GB RAM, RAID 5) that is starting to fail. It currently is running SBS 2003. I use this at home for a total of 8 people (email mainly but SP and IIS as well). I have been meaning to replace it for awhile but just haven't gotten around to it and to be honest the damn thing just ran and ran without issues.

What I would like to do is build a server that doesn't cost a ton (ideally around $600-$750) but one that will last for years. I have Licenses from MS events (great place to get them :))

  • ■ I want to at minimum install Windows Server 2012 & Exchange 2013. I know it is not recommended to install them on a single server but it can be done.
    ■ More in mind with what I want is to have a couple (2-3) VMs running on the hardware. I can have one for DC and services, one for Exchange, one for IIS (maybe SharePoint).
Below is the build I put together. Could I get feedback on lowering the cost with the above in mind? Is the CPU/MB too much? RAM?

Not having done this for awhile and not needing a true server to take 30-50 people on it... I was wondering if the higher cost items were too much for my needs?

2VMs only... Windows utility server (AD, DNS, DHCP, Etc.) & exchange 2013.

CPU, could it be a cheaper Xeon or even i5/i7?
RAM, could 16GB work okay?
MB, in general how is it? Is there a lower model with the SATA RAID I could get?

Thank y'all well in advance for the assistance!

I have found that I am having performance issues with the H87 MB. Intel doesn't support the LAN for Windows Server 2012 either. The performance issues I'm getting are making me wonder if the H87 chipset + XEON + RAID config for Server 2012 just don't work well. It takes a crazy amount of time to install windows server. Turning on Hyper-V and I start to see event errors about potential disk failures and installing the OS on the Hyper-V side takes 8+ hours. I'm thinking about kicking it back and getting a server MB with C222, C224, or C226. What is the main difference between those three?
