(Apr 7 2014) was the last day I was able to use my Dell Dimension E520 desktop running Win XP SP3. I proceeded to shut it down after I was done using it without any issues or concerns.
Then (Apr 8 2014), when I turned the desktop on, it would go through the typical dell splash screen and typical startups screen all but the Windows XP splash screen. Everything just seems to freeze right before where I would usually see the Windows XP logo splash screen. I just see only on a completely blank black screen.

I am not sure what to do or even what the issue is. I haven't had any noticeable symptoms before the issue either.

I don't have XP CD

Also I read some other posts about similar issues where a chkdsk /R solution was suggested. I began the chkdsk /R and below are the results that appeared on screen. I am sorry if I was not supposed to do this without prior instruction please forgive me.

C:\WINDOWS>chkdsk /R

I am requesting any help and action steps to allow me to find the issue and a solution so I continue using this computer and it would be greatly appreciated!
sorry for long post
Thank you.

Solution
You could pick up a small Windows 8.1 tablet for about $300-400. Or, if you know how to build PCs, then you can get the following cheap desktop configuration:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3qXAU

CPU: AMD A6-5400K 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor ($54.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A75M Pro4+ Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard ($59.99 @ Micro Center)
Memory: Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($38.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($51.98 @ OutletPC)
Case: Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($45.62 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 430W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($19.99 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($14.99 @ Newegg)...
BAD NEWS
1) XP is not longer supported
2) Having several errors on the drive may be indicating Hard Drive Failure. Testing by trying Safe Mode, but if the physcial drive is dying this maybe the only way to just 'get your data off' to a external HDD
3) No Windows BELOW Windows 7 SP1 can read/see a 4K standard selling HDD. You would be unable to just 'replace' the hdd in many cases.
4) the cost of a new HDD is $129 or so, the cost of Windows 7/8 (the ONLY supported OSes) is $179. The cost of a brand new i3 Desktop (or laptop) with 8GB of RAM, 600GB-1TB drive, DVD, underwarranty AND includes Windows 8 ---> $249 .

Honestly it beyond time to finally replace the system. IF you can get into Safe Mode, you can get a external HDD for $50 at Walmart then run Windows Easy Transfer to backup your stuff so you can move it to a new system.

Tried bootcfd /rebuild, fixboot and fixmbr as well. Didn't work I got same black blank screen from before.

All the available alternate mode options (safe modes, last known good config, etc) - they all result in the same blank black screen or just get stuck
For example:
I tried booting one more time again and went to Advanced Startup Options and I choose "Safe mode with command prompt" and after I pressed enter, I saw a lots of lines with text that look like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\xxxxxxx.sys
(each line ends begins the same until the end and ends with a different "whatever.sys")

these lines of text populate and eventually stops populating at these last 2 lines:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\avgrkx86.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\avglogx.sys

then nothing happens and just stays on this screen displaying all these lines of text until I hit power button to turn off.

Does this give any clue as to what the problem is
and please advise any solutions?

Sorry I am not the best with computers. could you please instruct me how to "booting to a recovery partition".

and
"how to install Linux" How to install Linux with no working dvd/cd drive?
Can Linux be used for the foreseeable future if I am able to get it to work? Meaning will I still be able to use the PC as usual just Linux will be running instead of XP?

What can I do to access my files on the computer?

As I noted Windows itself is hosed up OR the HDD that Windows is INSTALLED to is dying. You could try to reinstall XP, but as you have "no working DVD" drive then your computer IS DEAD. You have no recovery way and they don't make old IDE based DVD or HDD that your computer can ONLY use.

It is time to replace the computer you have no other option.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($89.98 @ OutletPC)
Total: $376.53

If you will use the PC for gaming, then you can get an FX-6300 or i3 CPU, 8 GB RAM, 500w PSU, and an R7-260 or GTX 750 Ti video card and still get a good low price on the build.
