2 probably causes:

1. you haven't installed the cooler properly - e.i. the heatsink isn't making good contact with the CPU, got too much/too little thermal paste etc.
2. you are getting false readings from the program you are using. Most reliable way to check CPU temps while idle is in BIOS - health Status tab.

or you are getting a false reading.what utility are you using to measure temps? run your hand around the base of the cooler.does it feel hot? 105c is smokin hot and if it is a true reading your computer should either shutdown or at least throttle back noticeably.

What could have gone wrong?

1) Bad Temp Readings
2) Too Much Thermal Paste
3) Too Little Thermal Paste
4) Clamps/Screws are not tight enough on Heatsink

What is your processor?

Is the fan extremely loud?

CPU - i5 3570, fan is average vlume, same as always, i feel like the thermal paste cant be the problem, well i hope it isnt!, i will say that when i reattached the stock fan it didnt go in rpoeprly, but after a bit i feel like it clicked and it was attached, its not wobbly or anything and feels quite firm

When the PC is off, before you see any sign of windows popping up press the "Delete" key (not backspace.)

Many BIOS are accessed with the Delete Key. If yours uses F12, then you will need to press that instead.

The PC will start at a usually black screen with white writing in the corners saying things like "Press Delete to enter Setup" or "Press F12 to enter BIOS"

Something like that. It will take a few tries probably.

It sounds like your sensors are simply wrong, since the fan is not running at max speed and the PC isnt crashing.

ok, so jsut put in an old CPU heatsink and its fine! back to 35 celcius. So thats all good, but i dont get why the other heatsink wasn't working, it was spinning, it wasnt loose, how could it have been faulty, but at least it works now :p

I basically agree. With temps that high it is unlikely that the top of the CPU was making good contact with the heatsink base.
