Hi -

I have a smart tv at a Unversity that will not connect to the university network because the TV is not WPA2 Enterprise compatiable.

The school is 100% wireless (no ethercords - will there is one coming from the wall but it is dead)

Two questions:

I have a live cable line hooked up to my TV, which provided by the university. Can I get a cable line splitter and run one cable line to the TV and one to a router, and will this give me my own personal network with the router?

Two, can a ISP like Comcast come and "activate" the dead ethernet wire in my university apartment so I can hook up a wireless router to it?

Thanks
Anthony

xpress connect is a program that helps you setup 802.1x which is part of WPA2 enterprise mode. To use 802.1x the end device must support what is called EAPOL...basically it must have 8021.x support. The key to 802.1x it is designed to prevent you from placing a router or bridge or other device between and share the connection. So pretty much any external adapter for a TV or game system will not work. If they do it would defeat the key purpose of 802.1x.

The method you use of sharing the connection using your PC is about the only way I know to bypass the 802.1x security. Since it is your log in credentials at risk it is up to you to ensure nobody else can use the connection on the back side of the computer.

No because the equipment has a MAC address that has to be provisioned on your node of the tap and not shared so that they can bill you separate to the other students on that tap. If the equipment is owned by the university then chances are it is shared and not setup for individual taps. The best people to talk to about this is Comcast because they will know how the equipment is setup in your building.

Just get a Wireless Gaming Adaptor (WGA) that does support WPA2 and connect it to the back of your TV.

Thank you very much JimF_35.

Two follow up questions -

1. Will a WPA2 compatible WGA work on a WPA2 - Enterprise system? Most WGA I looked up only say WPA2 Personal.

2. To connect to the University Wi Fi, I must download a University program called "Xpress Connect" - Will a Smart TV (Samsung) be able to run a program like this if I download it using the internet browser on the Smart TV (I currently use Connectify to share my laptop internet with my TV). I also have a PS4. Would either TV or PS4 be able to run the University "Xpress Connect" program or is it gamble?

Thanks in advance.

Most university will not allow you to bring in your own internet connection but I suppose you could ask them. You can always do it the expensive way and use one of the broadband cell carriers for internet.

Thanks. I believe I am going to buy an old lap top and dedicate it to sharing internet through connectify and keep it running indefinitely that way I will have a 24/7 internet connection. Thank you both very much.
