I am installing a server on my old pc running XP.

I have 4 discs..

1) A ubuntu disc
2) XP installation CD
3) FreeNas (Server software)
4) A copy of age of empires(Game)

Computer recognises disc 1 when I insert disc but won't boot from it(This is most likely though because it might be 64 bit though so nvm that..)

Computer will neither recognise nor boot from disc 2 even though when I insert it into my good computer it shows up fine. This is also the disc I used to install xp on that computer with so I know it should work.

Computer will neither recognise nor boot from disc 3 even though when I insert it into my good computer it shows up fine. I even reformatted the disc and formatted it "like a usb stick" and then put one song on it. Still didn't show up.

Computer will recognise and play disc 4.

1,2,3 are all dvd discs which my drive supports.
Drive is slow at loading/recognising discs.

We did recently 'fix' the tray of the drive being stuck and we haven't used the optical drive in ages, could the lens be dirty?

I have also tried putting these discs in a couple of times do its not random which discs show up yet there're the exact same discs(1 + 2 + 3)

Any thoughs?

P.S If you suggest any software fix's i'm working in XP.
Thanks for reading :)

EDIT: As I said discs 1, 2 and 3 are DVD discs and 4 is CD. I can't see a reason why it would recognise disc 1 and not 2 and 3.

It could well be dirty.

I have seen optical drives stop reading dual layer discs(making some movies not work), but this does not seem to be the case for you.

IIRC XP was CD not DVD(found it to be a pain that XP MCE needed 2 CD's when a single DVD would have covered it). I can not be sure about the others.

By any chance are the other non working disc's all CD. Maybe the drive is not reading CD's any more.

If you can not boot from a CD, chances are it is a hardware failure and not software.
