Why do graphics cards such as the HD 7870 cost 100 dollars more than gpu's such as the r9 265 Dual X when the cheaper one performs the same if not better?

Solution
Assuming you are correct, it's a simple Supply and Demand issue likely.

When stock starts to dry up some people might start grabbing an HD7870 for Crossfire. My GTX680 from Asus was about $500 recently and the Asus GTX770 which is basically identical was $320.

Some people might just ask ridiculous prices knowing some uneducated fool will buy it once they are no longer in stores so they can't compare prices.

There is some price fluctuation due to a difference in QUALITY between brands though, and in some cases they may put more Video RAM on a card and jack up the price so people see a higher number (oh "4GB is better than 2GB right?").

Finally, some stores have completely different prices. I saw some GTX750Ti's for $150USD at...

Think of it this way. You buy a 680 for 500 a couple of years ago. You only have 250 for a new card and the 770 costs 330 for similar performance. If you can find a 680 and sli it would be cheaper than buying a new 770 and give more performance. Considering the person doesn't want to sell the other card online.

True.
Unfortunately, what usually happens is that prices on a GTX680 (or any card) start to drop then suddenly start going out of stock and the cost skyrockets.

So there's often this very short period of time when buying a 2nd card makes sense.

Also, if the card was relatively expensive to buy then maybe I should just be SELLING my old card, then putting that money into a much better single card like a GTX780.

Yes but that are a lot of idiots trying to buy the next best graphics cards and this creates a problem of 15 year olds buying an expensive card for an hp with a 300w power supply. Selling computers parts is much harder and it is easy to get scammed or have something break on transit.
Also some people don't want to deal with selling or ask the original price causing the actual price to change.
