Cannot afford a new one, will I need to rebuild it? What will i need to rebuild it for around $ 250-$275? Thanks!

Since you don't seem to be too demanding, I'd recommend eBaying up a dell d830 (built like a tank) for around $150-$175. You can then swap or add* any SATA 2.5" you want, Seagate Momentus hybrid is my recommendation. With a bios flash you can run 64 bit, I recommend bios ver A15, I had problems with A16.

* you need to buy a drive bay adapter to add a second HD.

PS, it's a laptop but you can connect your peripherals and monitor if you want.

Thanks so much for the advice! I had not thought of ebay at all! Will certainly look into this!

No problem,

Just to clarify, the bios flash would be for the laptop, not the drive.
IMO the d830 is the best price-performance value in a used laptop for the average user. But keep your eye out for nVidia graphics and a WUXG screen for best value. If you buy one without a drive and drive caddy, drive caddy is just the plastic cover for the drive, you can get that for a few bucks on eBay too. Power adapters are cheap as well.
