Hello all.

So I bought my buddy's old PC, and I was wondering if there was any upgrading i could do to it.
Windows 7 64 bit
Intel(R) core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7300 @ 2.66gz 2.77ghz
Geforce 9500Gt 512mb DDR2
4gb of ram (motherboard won't allow for anymore)
Power supply PS-400w
I guess i'm mainly wondering if there's any affordable graphics cards that would increase performance. I'm not naive, i don't expect to play high end, or even modern games (I bought a PS4 for newer titles, not that that matters) and was just hoping to achieve some solid performance on older games and less system intensive indie games on something higher than 800x600. For instance, I had an exceedingly difficult time running Pay day 2 at a solid frame rate, and decided not to buy the game. Any help greatly appreciated!

Solution
Yes, that PSU will meet the needs of a 750ti. The 750ti does not require external PCIe power. It gets all it needs from the slot in the motherboard.
Yeah - everything can be and should be upgraded! I'd only keep Windows. Everything else would go in the bin.

There are 1700 CPUs better than yours. So the CPU and motherboard should go.

There are 290 GPUs better than yours. Try a GTX 750Ti to at least something to play 1080p. You'll then also need a 450W Power Supply to run it.

No PSU upgrade is required for the GTX 750ti as already stated.

Also, the old Socket 775 CPU is not really up to any stronger a video card. This old rig should have little $$$ spent on it, rather get a new video card and use what you have. Then, start saving for a new rig altogether.

I had originally planned on building a brand new PC, but it just got too expensive for me. That's why I settled for a Playstation 4 to play newer games. Im not trying to spend more than 200 dollars. I'd love to spend 1000 plus and build my dream computer, but right now it's not financially viable for me. So the GTX750 ti? Ill look into it. thanks guys. Oh, and I looked at my power supply and it says "380w max power" does that mean I won't be able to use the 750ti?

Your system only needs the 750Ti or HD 7750 if you are going to try to run games like crysis3 etc they will work, you won't get the best results but they will play nicely without the great great great graphics.

Whoever tells you that the core2duo will fail is wrong. I have side PC with same stuff in it, i can tell you only the 9500GT is failing you in games, if it was a 9600GT or 9800GT you would see better performance. THe 9500GT is a naturally weak card.

So go for a new GPU only. A game like crysis 3 will run on C2D, most benchmarks are on 1080p, low settings you would achieve an average of 20fps, but you are aiming for less. So honestly you could easily reach over 30FPS average med settings at medium resolution imo.

I'm wondering if upgrading to better ram is possible (Im using ddr2) and if i did, if it increased performance. But my buddy said I might not be able to because of my mother board. Any help greatly appreciated!

Ok if you have used up all slots that means that you do not have the DDR 3 Ram Sockets on this board though there are a few mobos that have DDR2-DDR3 sockets, i assume that this mobo is not one of them. So to answer you, no you won't be able to use ddr 3 unless you change your mobo though you could get a cheap LG775 that has DDR3 support although that would imply OCing to be able to accomodate for 1333 RAM. I would not recommend this waste of money.

If your gona choose the upgrading path. I would go with an APU instead of wasting money on old hardware.

this is cheap you were going to take a gtx 750ti costing 140. Lets upgrade you decently.

But the A6-6400k will be more than enough to do some good mild gaming. Honestly 148 bucks for a full great entry level gaming upgrade you can't go wrong with that. I built one for my friend to upgrade from his dying dual core+9500GT, he almost jizzed himself with pleasure at the difference when he played Batman on 1080p. :) Good luck pal.
