Game freezing to black screen, monitor losing signal

When I go to play a game I can play for roughly 10 minutes before my game freezes, shortly after my screen goes black, the sound gets stuck looping and after about 5 seconds my monitor tries searching for a signal. The only way to fix it is to reboot the computer

I've always had problems with my Nvida drivers crashing, but they usually recovered. I went through at least 3 or 4 older drivers, the last one I installed fixed the problem for a few weeks but it suddenly started crashing again.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

My laptop specs if needed:

Nvida Geforce 8800M GTS
Windows 7 64 bit
3GB RAM
Core 2 duo 1.66 - 1.7 GHz processor

I'm going to continue trying out different older drivers to see if anything may fix it.

I have been keeping a close eye on my cpu and video card tempatures, it hasn't been running hot so I'm assuming overheating isn't an issue

Sounds like somethings getting hot. Blue screen usually means Graphics Card problem. Black screen CPU. It looks an old PC. Do you vacuum it out now and again? If so, it might be time to check that the CPU cooler is OK. It might even need re-TIMing.

My CPU automatically shuts down my system if it reaches 185F. It's hasn't been going past 153F

I did have overheating problems with my CPU when I first used this computer, but that was because it was packed full of dust and I didn't think to clean it out. After I blew it out real good it never came close to overheating and that was years ago. Since then I blow out my computer every 3 weeks with compressed air

When it used to overheat before I blew it out it always instantly shut itself off once it reached 185F instead of freezing up and giving me a black screen

My video card from what I've been told is running nowhere near a dangerous tempature

Edit - after my drivers crashed and recovered I got a look at my teamptures, CPU wasn't running hot and my video card was running fairly cool

I now have trouble appreciating non-metric but 153F is probably about 70C I think. That's starting to get near being a worry. I worry over 60C and panic over 70C. But I agree - your CPU shouldn't shut down at that.

Is your mobo going along OK? I get System Board and Motherboard temp readouts with my UEFI. And I don't like any of them getting even to 40C.

Or maybe your stuff is past its use-by date? How old is it? Has it been in non-stop service?

Sorry about the temperatures, some of the temperature software I'm using only comes in fahrenheit

My laptop was made around 2008, but it hasn't been used that much before I got it. It was used lightly by my brother, he put it in his closet where it sat for about 2 or 3 years until he pulled it out and gave it to me. I used it for some heavy gaming for a few years now

I never had to take the tempature of my motherboard before, do you know of any software that would allow me too?

On a side note, someone I talked to thinks my video card is dieing, that may also be the case but I wanted a second opinion on it
