Yes.

With PCIe, a basic rule of thumb is that if it fits, it will work. It may not always true with chipset limitations and other special cases, but PCIe 3.0 cards are backwards compatible with older motherboards I believe, and I know that newer PCIe 3.0 motherboards will work with older cards.

I have a similar question. I, too, have an old GeForce 8800 GTX video card that I would love to update, but think I'll wait because I'm already running over budget as I revitalize my old computer. I will tell you what I'm getting, hoping for a suggestion or two, and you can tell me if I really need to pony up the cash for a new video card at this point.

-Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000CHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Enterprise Hard Drive Bare Drive,
-ORICO PVU3-5O2U 7 USB 3.0 Ports Desktop PCI - Express Card,
-Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz,
-ASUS MAXIMUS VI FORMULA LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX gaming board with double-sided ROG Armor,
-HyperX Beast 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) ***SHOULD I GET THE 2400 INSTEAD???

I'm getting some other things as well, but this should suffice for this conversation.

Thanks. My items are at the Newegg checkout....
