Need Diagnostic assistance on stuttering PC

The wife's relatively new computer (identical to mine, bought at the same time and still working perfect) is starting to act up. I've run all sorts of stress tests and burnin and other diagnostic software and can't isolate the issue. She's experiencing rather long load times, and during video games she'll occasionally freeze for a few seconds when she normally gets 60FPS.

I'm suspecting harddrive, as I can see how large texture loading taking too long could cause stuttering, and of course if the read speed is slow then program loading would be slow as well. However I am having a hard time getting solid proof that it's the harddrive, and I don't want to spend money and go through the reinstall/cloning ordeal and still have the problem persist.

So, what could be the issue? Any advise on tools for diagnosing, or anything like that? Techniques for testing... anything.

Thanks in advance for the help.

The best tool to use for hard drive testing is the drive manufacturer's own diagnostic software.
For WD drives, the link to the CD Image is here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/63494-looking-for-western-digital-data-lifeguard-iso/

For other makes of drive, go here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

You can create a CD from the CD Image with IMGBurn: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn

Then boot the computer from that CD to run the hard drive test.
